Studies on estimation of the degree of hookworm infection by Stoll's dilution egg-counting method have hitherto been conducted on the basis of the hypothesis that the sample mean of the number of hook worm eggs contained in a large test tube (the number of eggs contained in the unit capacity of 0.15 cc of the suspension of feces) agrees with the population mean. In order to examine the relation between these two mean values, the following tests were performed: 213, 483, 692 and 951 eggs were placed in 4 large test tubes containing the suspension of feces, and the numbers of eggs were counted 60 times by Stoll's dilution egg-counting method. The result shows that the values of population mean and sample mean have nearly agreed with each as follows: In a tube to which 213 eggs had been placed the population mean was 0.71, and the sample mean 0.71; in a tube to which 483 eggs had been placed the population mean was 1.6, and the sample mean 1.55; in a tube to which 692 eggs had been placed, the population mean was 2.31, and the sample mean 2.16; and in a tube to which 951 eggs had been placed the population mean was 3.17, and the sample mean 2.93. The values experimentally obtained of frequency of occurrence of eggs in a test tube more or less agreed with the theoretical values based on the probability of occurrence in Poisson distribution. The test for the occurrence of eggs performed by plotting caluculated values has revealed that the eggs in a large test tube are distributed in Poisson distribution.
