Since Krebs advocated the theory of "Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle," the importance of citric acid metabolism has been the subject of various investigations. The author measured plasma citric acid levels by the method of Natelson et al. in children suffering from chondrodystrophia foetalis, acute and chronic liver troubles, acute nephritis and nephrosis as well as in normal human beings of various age groups. At the same time, the author conducted observation of the citric acid changes in the plasma after citric acid, vitamin D and iodcasein had been administered. The findings of the investigation are as follows: 1) No difference in plasma citric acid levels due to age and sex was observed in normal human beings. 2) Children suffering from chondrodystrophia foetalis manifested values within the normal range. The existence of hypercitricaemia was observed in children suffering from both acute and chromic liver troubles. When plasma citric acid levels in children suffering from acute and chronic liver troubles were compared, slightly higher levels were detected in the former. The difference, however, was such that it was not significant from the standpoint of the science of sampling. The existance of hypocitricaemia was observed in children suffering from both acute nephritis and nephrosis; abnormally low values characterized nephrosis. 3) Higher plasma citric acid levels were recorded after citric acid and vitamin D had been administered, but no appreciable changes were shown after iodcasein had been administered.
