For the past thirteen years, the author has taught an elective course named "Special Seminar in Politics and Economics" to senior students at ICU High School, a school specializing in accepting returnees. This class is unique in that it consists of student presentations and debates. The term "debate education" refers to a style of education that is radically dissimilar from the traditional Japanese education style which emphasizes acquisition of knowledge by the students. On the contrary, this style of education presupposes an active participation of the students. More specifically, this kind of education proceeds as follows: the students conduct a research on a particular topic, make a presentation of the research, and have a debate with classmates based on it. Through this method, the students not only acquire pertient knowledge concerning world-wide issues but also learn the skills to conduct researches and acquire various means of self expression. The objectives of this course are as follows: First, besides the acquisition of the basic knowledge concerning social issues, they are to experience the joy of self-expression and to understand the significance of inspiring each other through learning together. Secondly, they are to learn the basic skills of conducting researches, presentations, and debate (and discussions). Thirdly, they are to collaborate with their classmates on a research concerning a specific social issue (such as those concerning the problems of the ageing society or problems concerning the environment) and propose solutions to those at the School Festival. This will enable them to encounter the difficulty and challenge of presenting the issues to an audience outside of the school. Finally, through these activities, the students are to develop their intellect into one that is critical and analytical. The students are satisfied with what they have acquired through this course in the past year. This is because they have come to realize the importance of speeches and debates in the society and moreover, they have had the chance to develop those skills. They have also attained the ability to consider matters from multiple points of view and were satisfied with the successful results in their School Festival Project. The role of the instructor is not only to transfer knowledge to the students but also to serve as an advisor whose primary role is to encourage the students to teach themselves and research on their own and to give them pertinent directions or advice, if any.
