The Justification-theory in this letter is developed mainly in chapter 9, which concludes the Christology begun in chapter 7. What is the nature of its contents? For this purpose, verses 2 to 5 are examined. The use of "hyper" in v.2 remindes us of Rom 5:6ff.. Clauses like "the just for the unjust" in v.2, "except in the son of God alone" in v.4 and "the righteousness of the one should make righteous many wicked" in v.5 are very Pauline. Neither of the phrases, "righteousness of God", which is the central theme of the Pauline Justification-theory, nor "justification by faith in Jesus Christ" appear in this chapter ; however, "justification by Christ" is used, and especially justification by Christ alone is emphasized. This point is more Pauline than Paul himself. On the other hand, the idea of the wrath of God to the unjust, the counteraction to justification by law, or emphasizing the grace of God do not exist. We cannot help thinking that the theological discussion, which, for one using Pauline vocabulary, would be important, is omitted, because of the author's intention to emphasize the presence of salvation. This seems to come from a common contemporary tendency, which put the main point on moral theory rather than on dogma.
