Stanzaic alliterative poems (henceforth, SAP) were composed in late Middle English (henceforth, ME) period with ME alliterative style within the framework of complicated 12-14 line stanzas by the poets, who should have had a lot of knowledge of both alliterating and rhyming traditions. The aim of this article is to investigate the uses of (1) the poetic synonyms for 'man', (2) the phrases with the syntactic structure of ADJ.-est + Prep. + (Det.) + NOUN and (3) without + NOUN phrases, in the fourteen stanzaic alliterative poems in late ME period, in order to reveal some aspects of traditional and innovative stylistic features of these poems. The investigation shows the following results. (1) All poetic synonyms for 'man' except tulke are used in SAP. A typical formula with them used in unrhymed alliterative poetry in ME, NOUN for 'man' + Prep. + (Det.) + NOUN, also occurs in SAP. The poets of SAP extended the formula with alliteration to the second half-line. (2) The phrases with the syntactic structure of ADJ.-est + Prep. + (Det.) + NOUN, which are extensively used in unrhymed alliterative poems in ME, are also used in SAP. The phrases are also used with alliteration in the second half-line in SAP. (3) without + NOUN phrases, a typical rhyming phrase used in rhymed poems in ME, in which the rhythmic pattern of the line is homomorphic, are used mainly in rhyming position by poets in SAP, but with heteromorphic rhythms. In composing their own poems, the SAP poets skillfully use traditional expressions from both alliterating and rhyming poetry and extend them to meet their own poetic requirements.
