Judo was begun by Jigoro Kano, who established Kodokan in 1882. It is important that he established it in 1882, because in 1380's Japanese were apt to neglect Japanese way of life as Japanese civilization. They respect the western way of life or western civilization. Respecting a Japanese art from ancient lines, Jigoro Kano adopted many merits from each sect of Jujitu, and eliminated military elements from it. He wanted to make Judo suitable to the new age, and connected the theories, arts and rules of it. A modern educational system was organized in 1872. It aimed at training mind and body to build up ones character. Nowadays not only Japanese have played Judo, but also peaple of many countries of the world have taken much delight in Judo. It is mainly due to physical education to include Judo that Judo has been very popular. I intend to explain how Judo changed since it was placed on the regular curriculum, and arrange the change in three times as follows, 1) Till Judo was placed on the regular curriculum, (from Meiji 15 until Showa 5) 2) From Judo was placed on the Showa Era till the sudden occurrence of World War II. 3) From the end of the Second World War till Judo as a subject on the regular curriculum reviues. (from Showa 20 until 25) This treatise treats how Judo was adopted as physical exercise, and, moreover, it treats the influence that Judo has upon physical exercise and the position or the meaning that Judo occupies in physical education.
