Judo was devised by Jigoro Kano in the Meiji era. It has sprung from Jujitsu, a training method of wrestling on the battlefield. Those who created the new schools of Jujitsu thought out their own secret forms for offense and deffense. Being very dagerous, Randori in Jujitsu was not trained, but Kata, a preappointed pretending technique was trained. It is in the late Edo era that people began to train for Randori as well as Kata. Even in those days the training of Kata was the most important. Jigoro Kano modernized Jujitsu and called it Judo. He made Judo an offensive and deffensive sport in which dangerous techniques in Jujitsu, such as knocking, kicking and striking, etc. were strictly prohibited. Therefore Randori in Judo is not so dagerous as in Jujitsu and it is the most important method of training. But these prohibited techniques have been maintained as Kata in Judo. Now Judo, a representative Japanese sport comprise Randori and Kata. It will be important for Judo experts to master Kata.
