On May 28th, 2006, the new TOEIC test was introduced in Japan. There are some new features in the new TOEIC : i) the adoption of three English accents (English, Canadian, Australian including New Zealand) in addition to American Standard English in the Listening Section: ii) longer passages in the short conversation part (Part III), the short talks part (Part IV) and the reading comprehension part (Part VII): iii) the new addition of the double-passage questions in the reading comprehension (Part VII). According to the exposition of the Institute for International Business Communication (IIBC) and Educational Testing Service (ETS), the concept of the new TOEIC is "More authentic" and this conceptual change was intended to make the test more effective in order to measure test takers' English competence on a practical basis. At the same time, we have seen a variety of other new English qualification tests in Japan, so it seems the TOEIC test was changed in order to maintain its position in the English qualification test market. The purpose of this paper is to explain the features of the new TOEIC, to analyze how it has changed from the previous TOEIC and also to make various comparisons between the new TOEIC and other new English qualification tests in Japan.
