I was in Tianjin in the summer of 2000 with the students who went to train their Chinese language and had an occasion to visit the restored mansion where one of the branches of Shi Family resided and obtained a booklet in which a brief history of the family is depicted. The present article is intended to introduce the formation of typical extended family in Tianjin and their residential style based on the booklet mentioned above. The ancestor of the Shi Family came to Yangliuqing village from Shandong province in mid 18th century. The family was engaged in ship transportation along the canals. Their wealth was formed by transportation business and later by millet sales and poneshops. The family lived in Siheyuan style residence. The head of the family decided to divide family wealth to his four sons in mid 19th century while he was still alive. The article introduces brief history of each of the four son's family and their residence.
