In my experiments I used rabbits, dogs, cats, marmots, rats, mice, and pigeons, which were healthy and fully grown. By staining the mitochondria in their various ganglion cells with a method which I specially devised, I observed them very minutely. The original shape of mitochondria in various ganglion cells of normal animals is granular. But usually, whether separated or connected with one another, they look like big or small granules, bacilli, or commas. In the ganglion cells these mitochondria (I) sometimes lie scattered, (II) sometimes are arranged in rows, (III) sometimes gather together in cloudy forms, and (IV) sometimes into net forms. As a rule mitochondria in various ganglion cells are scattered among Nissl bodies. But at times, in the cloudy and net forms they crowd around the nuclei, or they are arranged like clouds or nets at the circumference of the cells and rarely in the wide space between Nissl bodies. In the part at which the ganglion cell processes start from the cell protoplasm, mitochondria group generally into net forms, while in the ganglion cell processes they show themselves always in rows and occasionally in rough net groups. In the inner and outer pyramidal cells of the cerebrum, the sensory cells of the brain stem and spinal cord, the cerebellar Purkinje cells, the vagus ganglion cells, and the spinal ganglion cells, a great many mitochondria in various forms were found. In the motor cells of the brain stem, the spinal cord, and the sympathetic ganglion cells they were less in quantity. In the ganglion cells of hyppocampus major they were stained most slightly. Concerning the mitochondria in other ganglion cells, some were coloured, and some were not. Mitochondria in the various ganglion cells of doves, being stained most darkly, are greatest in quantity; in dogs' and cats' cells they are next in quantity; in marmots' and rabbits' cells they are still less in quantity; in rats' they are smallest in quantity.
