In the course of my experiments on healthy mature rabbits, I observed changes in the cerebrum, cerebellum and ganglion cells of the spinal cord one our after death; and three hours after death I saw remarkable changes in other ganglion cells. Signs appearing after death were shrinkage of ganglion cells, their diffusive colouring after staining, formation of vacuoles, change of nuclei, transformation of Nissl bodies and transformation or disappearance of mitochondria. It was mitochondria in the motor nerve cells of the spinal cord and of the brain-stem, and in the cerebella ganglion cells that early showed changes after death; they decreased in quantity or vanished one hour after death. That is one hour after, mitochondria in the pyramidal cells of the cerebral cortex, in the sensory nerve cells of the brain-stem and of the spinal cord, and in the ganglion cells of the hippocampus major became fine, while those in the sympathetic ganglion cells, in the vagus ganglion cells, and in the spinal ganglion cells were dyed lightly. Three hours after death, mitochondria in the nerve cell processes showed change, and those in the ganglion cells of the hippocampus major disappeared. Five hours after death, mitochondria in the ganglion cells of the cerebrum, of the cerebellum, and of the spinal cord vanished. Mitochondria in the vagus ganglion cells and in the sympathetic ganglion cells were almost invisible thirty six hours after death. After death mitochondria in various ganglion cells underwent changes in the following order: 1. Light colouring. Reduction to finer sizes. 2. Transposition (Transformation). 3. Disappearance.
