I have drawn the following conclusions after observations and experiments on the healing of wounds as determined by their tensile strength. 1) It has been found possible to determine the rate of healing of the simple incised wound for the skin, fascia and muscles. 2) The healing of the simple incised wound is generally a function of the fibroplastic process, that is to say, the tensile strength of a healing wound is a function of the fibroplastic process. 3) A curve expressing this shows a lag period of several days and then a phase of fibroplasia, rising rapidly at first and more slowly as it approaches the maximal strength of the wound. The latter point is attained in about 2 weeks. This is the almost the same conclusion as that which was announced by Carrel, in 1910, in several papers on the healing of surface wounds, by measuring the changing surface area. 4) The quiescent period of a wound in the fascia appears to be longer than that of wounds in the skin and muscles. 5) This quiescent period is most necessary and most significant in the healing of wounds, and hence the fundamental thing in healing is get over this period in safety and to make it as short as possible. 6) The effect of excessive tension of the sutures on the healing of wounds is prominent at the beginning only, and after 2 weeks it makes no difference. 7) Although the effect of the method of suture on the healing of wounds is not very marked, I recognized that excessive tension of the sutures is both beneficial and injurious. 8) If we make the tension of the sutures in a wound excessive, unusual magnification of the puncture channel of the needle, which is attributable to anemic necrosis, increase of secretion and also disturbance of nutrition and decrease of resistance by reason of arrest of circulation take place. These phenomena are often apt to induce suppuration of the wound. 9) During the lag period of several days-about 5 days in the dog-the strength wound must be artifically reinforced by the use of sutures, but as soon as this period is over we must take off those sutures as quickly as possible. 10) I conclude that the healing of wounds as determined by their tensile strength reaches an end after about 3 weeks
