Haden and Orr recently published an experimental study of intestinal obstruction, from which study these investigators reached the conclusion that there was a definite relationship between the intoxication and the sodium chloride content of the blood. These investigators are furthermore of the opinion that the administration of sodium chloride serves to prevent intoxication on account of its property of reacting with the toxicity substance and destroying its toxicity. Since then, for the purpose of clearing up this point many experimental studies have been carried out, but it is still very widely discussed, and many observations render very doubtful Haden und Orr's original hypothesis that the fall in blood chlorides is partly due to a combination of the chloride ion with some toxic body in a process of detoxication. I have drawn the following conclusions after experimental studies on intestinal obstruction in dogs and rabbits. The experimental cases of acute intestinal obstruction reported show a definite and constant change in the blood chemistry by a fall in the blood chlorides, and simple obstruction of the small intestine in dogs gives rise to a rapidly developing fatal toxemia, and the higher the obstruction is placed, the earlier the death ot the animals takes place. On the other hand the more severe the toxemia induced, the the more striking is the fall in the blood chlorides. The chlorides can in no way be lost through the urine in the case of intestinal obstruction. The fall in chlorides in acute intestinal obstruction is partly due to the loss of chloride as hydrochloric acid though vomiting and also the loss of chloride by the escape through the mucous membrance along the whole course of the intestine below the obstruction, but the remarkable fall can be considered to be chiefly induced by the accumulation of large quantities of chlorides in the intestine above the obstruction. Nowadays a true detoxicating function of the chlorides in still considered unlikely, but although a true detoxicating function of the chlorides is very unlikely, it is still possible that the low chloride content of the blood and tissues may be the most important factor in the toxemia.
