It is the purpose of the present investigation to obtain some information as to the physico-chemical state of chlorine ions in the human blood serum, that is, whether the chlorine ions are combined to some extent with proteins or not. The experimental results may be summarized as follows: (1) The total concentration of the chlorine ion in the serum is evaluated by means of Ruszniak's method to be 0.111±0.0012 normal (the mean value with its probable error.) (2) The chlorine ion activity of the serum at the dilution of 1-16 X (diluted with distilled water), is estimated by means of the silver chloride electrode. The result obtained are tabulated as follows: 3) The chlorine ion activity in aqueous NaCl solution at the dilution of 10-1280 is determined with the same method as (2). The relation between the chlorine ion exponent P_<Cl'> and the dilution v of NaCl solution is found to be expressed by the following equation: 0.82log v-0.9031 P_<Cl'>+0.2156=0 From the results (1) and (2), the ratio of the chlorine ion activity to its total concentration [Cl']/[total Cl'] is calculated with respect to each dilution. Moreover, the activity coefficients a's of NaCl solutions, which have the same total concentrations of the chlorine ion as those of the blood serum at various dilutions, are computed from the empirical equation mentioned above. The coincidence between these two numerical values is satisfactory as shown in the following table: It may be concluded, therefore, that the chlorine ion in the blood serum at the dilution of 1-16 X are considered to be in a free state, that is to say, they do not combine with any protein and exist as if they were in a pure aqueous solution of NaCl.
