1108 Level set-based topology optimization with material heterogeneity using meshfree methods and dual discretizations

The technique so-called dual discretization is proposed to obtain higher resolutions of the boundaries and reduce the computation cost in level set-based topology optimization. Two discretizations are employed: (1) a finer structured discretization for solving Hamilton-Jacobi type equation by upwind finite difference method, and (2) a coarser structured/unstructured discretization for solving structural responses by meshfree method. Owing to smooth approximation of meshfree method, the information can be conveniently and accurately exchanged between the discretizations. Moving Least Squares Approximation with Discontinuous Derivative Basis Functions is employed to handle material heterogeneity of nonlinear structures. Numerical examples show the validity and efficiency of the proposed method. By using finer structured mesh the resolution of level set function is improved effectively and higher convergence rate is obtained.
