Five food additives were chosen from the officially permitted list: (sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, ethyl of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, sodium propionate, sodium nitrite). Mixtures of these five food additives were administered orally through intaken water to dd mice. The conclusions obtained were as follows. 1) During the experimental period, on the comparison between C, D groups (intaken official permissible food additives over safe limit) and A group (intaken no food additives), the growth of C and D groups was later than that of A group. The growth of B group (intaken food additives under safe limit) also was later than that of A group and this difference between A group and B group was considered to be due mainly to a synergistic toxicity of these five food additives. 2) In respect to the relation between intaken food additive values and variation rates of weight, a trend of a higher positive correlation coefficient was observed on all subjects. But the trend of that was not observed on subjects of B group intaken food additives under safe limit. 3) All blood values (hematocrit, red blood cell count and white blood cell count) both control group and B group were higher than that of C and D groups intaken food additives over sufe limit, but this trend was not observed on the comparition between control group and B group intaken under safe limit. 4) In respect to weight of the internal organs, the liver weights both C and groups intaken over safe limit were higher than that of control group and B group intaken under safe limit. But this trend was not abserved on the conparition between control group and B group intaken under safe limit.
