Some American Teachers in Nagasaki : Aspects of Interethnic Communication

Findings based on observation, questionnaires, and interviews dealing with interethnic communication between 16 Americans and various Japanese connected with Christian educational institutions in Nagasaki, Japan, have been interpreted relative to matters of ethnic identity. An analysis has been made of language use, particularly with regard to expression in terms of reference and address, and perceptions of degrees of directness. The importance of individuality, self-expression, and informality in differentiating Americans in this setting from members of other groups with whom they have contact has been discussed.
