Otto Friedrich Bollnow, in his first thesis, F.H. Jacobi's Philosophy of Life, tried to define Jacobi's philosophical quality as the philosophy of life. The study of this thesis by Bollnow shows some sprouting clues and fundamental characters which lead later to construct his "philosophy of hope". The clues are put in three points as follows: 1. Anthropological approach Bollnow gained an insight into human nature as well as his relation to the world through anthropological approach to Jacobi's concept of "faith". The analysis of "faith" brought him to its anthropological meaning and signifi-cance, which developed his "philosophy of hope". 2. Synthesis of existentialism and philosophy of life There are two basic threads in his "philosophy of hope", that is, philosophy of life and existentialism. As for the latter, Bollnow had critical views and felt alienated from it already at the time of his first thesis. It semed to be onesided viewpoint to Bollnow, for it is mainly constituted by the "mood of anxiety" as it is typical with M. Heideggar from whom Bollnow was influenced most among the existentialists. To make up the one-sidedness or the insufficiency of existentialism Bollnow insisted on the significance of "pious attitude" which he recognized to dwell in the philosophy of life. 3. Positive attitudes toward life Through the analysis of" faith" or "piety" Bollnow found the way to get out of "unfaith" or "hopelessness". These positive attitudes can only lead man to "supreme bliss" and "new securibility" that are essential concepts for his' "Philosophy of hope".
