In America, at the beginning of 19th century, preparatory education for university life started. This is the origin of remedial education courses in the present time. Nowadays, remedial education has been enlarged to include the concept of developmental or compensatory education. In Japanese universities remedial education courses have been increasing in recent year. What are the causes of this phenomenon? In the first place, there has been a move towards mass secondary and higher education. Second, there is the influence of the diversification of university entrance examinations. And third, there is the influence of the diversification of high school education. In this paper, I report on the case of remedial education at Hiroshima Institute of Technology and discuss the following points: 1) English education in terms of classification by students' proficiency. 2) remedial education before university students' enrollment. 3) remedial language education for graduate-school-oriented students. 4) The new "Freshman Seminar" course in the revised curriculum.
