In the present study, we taught Makaton signs, a method of language guidance, to four children with Down syndrome in the language acquisition stage. Although the four subjects had different cognitive abilities, they all learned to communicate using signs. In addition, acquisition of signs was useful for promoting language comprehension as well as compensating for the insufficiency of speech communication associated with dysarthria. Furthermore, overextension, which is observed in the process of language development, was also observed in the use of signs. Moreover, as with symbolic gestures, which are observed during the natural development process of healthy children, the acquired signs tended to disappear with the acquisition of speech communication. Acquisition of signs was thought to begin with expressions using the body and to gradually progress to expressions involving symbolic movements of the fingers or signs expressed as symbols. Although this was primarily observed for motion expressions, sign guidance that promotes visual expressions or imitation of actual motions using the body led to a transition from body-based thinking to a symbolic level, which was considered closer to the realm of languages. In addition, the application of signs was considered particularly effective for children with Down syndrome who had markedly delayed language development. This was thought to be affected by the children's interpersonal relationships and the presence of acquaintances who had actively used signs.
