After the zona pellucidae of mature unfertilized hamster eggs were removed with 0.1% Trypsin, they were centrifuged at 5,100×g for 30 min in a Ficoll gradient. Each egg was separated into a light and a heavy half. The rigidity of eggs at various stages of maturation division was examined by counting the number of all eggs in a group which separated into halves or fragments after centrifugation. Eggs in the germinal vecicle stage were very rigid. They did not separate into halves, but the stratification of cellular inclusions occurred after 30 min of centrifugation. The rigidity of eggs diminished with the progression of meiotic maturation, and then increased again after fertilization. The results obtained in the present study were compared and discussed with those previously reported.
