Kate Chopin's Fedora has been largely read as the story of a sorry spinster who lives a life of repressed passion and control, falls in love just once, but too late, with a younger man called Young Malthers, and replacing that passion onto his sister, passionately kisses her. Drawing on Bucher's perverse reading of the story published in 2003, and also referring to the late 19th century confusion of transvestism with lesbianism, this paper tries to make sense out of Fedora's fetishism for Malthers' clothing in view of the final lesbian kiss. The present paper views the lesbian-transvestite story, a poignant critique of heterosexism, as a mirror story of the unhappy spinster, steadily bridged by one signifier, Fedora.
