The dyeing properties of the chitosan-treated tussah silk fabrics that dyed with a carmine acid dye after mordanting were investigated. The dyeing affinity of the chitosan-treated fabrics was higher than that of the chitosan-untreated tussah silk fabrics. The affinity of the fabrics by the two-bath dyeing method was higher in comparison with that by the one-bath dyeing method. In case of the two-bath dyeing method, by addition of acid, the hues of the chitosan-treated and unmordanting fabrics little changed, but the hues without addition of acid changed from red into red-purple. On both of the chitosan-untreated and chitosan-treated fabrics by the one-bath dyeing method, color fastness to rubbing was better than the fastness by the two-bath method. Both of the fabrics by the one-bath method showed good color fastness to rubbing. The color fastness to perspiration on the fabrics treated by the one-bath method was better than that by the two-bath method. The color fastness to perspiration using acidic artificial perspiration solution was better than that using alkaline one. The sunlight fastness of the mordanting and chitosan-treated fabrics was high. The fastness on the fabrics mordanting with the Cu-mordant reagents was highest.
