In research of the intellectual design support system, it is hoped to provide a solution which can improve on the productivity of design work, and be useful for the effective management of design knowledge on-site for manufacturing enterprises, as well as be helpful for solving the problem of design technique transfer between experts and new designers. But in recent years, the considerations on product design and development in manufacturing are remarkably increasing. How to improve the intelligent productivity of design business has become a pressing need for enterprises. It is not only to concern with the geometric design information like drawing, more important thing to be considered for a designer is to treat with the existing design achievement and knowledge. But many generalpurposed CAD systems are good to support the works like drawing but pay less attention on the features of design activities and not effective to processing and support of the design knowledge. Thus, there has been a considerable growth of interest in knowledge-based design support systems. Based on the objectoriented methodologies and attributeoriented modeling paradigms, we have proposed the Assembly Structure as a design object model and Design Space for design problem representation. This paper focuses the discussion on knowledge representation and object modeling on machine elements design for construction of the intellectual design support systems. We also verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through the application examples.
