Welding vessel objects such as oil-tanks, heat exchangers used in power plant and other civil-used pressure vessels are comparatively large size products. The design works for such products concern with the geometric design information like drawing, but more important aspect that have to be considered for a designer is to treat with the existing design knowledge in the design operations. However traditional CAD systems are generally developed based on shapes-oriented approaches and pay less attention on the features of design activities and how to deal with design knowledge used in design process. To solve such a problem, as an integrative frame to deal with the knowledge of design object and design process, there has been a considerable growth of interest toward the knowledge-based design support systems. We have proposed an object-oriented design object model, assembly structure, for developing knowledge-based manufacturing design systems of welding vessel objects. We also discussed its application issues in different fields. This paper focus the discussion on weld joint modeling and its representation problems which are mainly concerned in manufacturing deign of weldins vessels.
