A 425MHz fractional-N frequency synthesizer as shown in Figurel is implemented by on a 0.18μm CMOS technology with fully integrated LC-VCO and fractional-N division block (sigma delta modulator). A 425MHz fractional-N frequency synthesizer can be adopted for the Industrial, Scientific and Medical radio bands (ISM bands), there are many competitive ongoing research projects for low data rate, power and narrow bandwidth transceiver applications such as remote key entry, home automation, low power telemetry. Usually a fully integrated frequency synthesizer based on LC-VCO is hard to achieve low phase noise characteristics because of modeling of integrated inductor and varactor capacitor. Therefore, it is hard to achieve narrow band characteristics. The main focus of this paper is to design LC-VCO for low phase noise for ISM and, digital blocks using behavioral descriptions, and to implement of fully integrated frequency synthesizer. The designed circuits is simulated that phase noise is -130dBc/Hz, locking time is about 30μs and channel spacing is 12.5kHz. These results are suitable for standard of ISM band RF transceivers.
