The caves at Ajanta are excavated in two different phases, the earlier is from 2^<nd> century BC to 2^<nd> century AD, and the later is in the late 5^<th> century, called Vakataka phase. This paper deals caves 21 to 28 at Ajanta, named western group, to study the development and sequence of the porch cells in the Vakataka phase. To begin with showing the excavation way using examples of Ajanta, I examine the sequence and the modification of the plan of the caves by means of studying the change of porch cells. The plain end of the porch firstly obtained single porch cell and finally the double cells with pillared antechamber. The new concept having double porch cells not only modified the plan of the caves, but the placement of the caves and the cells.
