Recently, the power generating gas turbine has been noted for its use in the high-efficiency combined cycle power plant combined with the steam turbine due to increasing energy demands. The steam turbine only has plant thermal efficiency (HHV) of about 40% even in the recent supercritical-pressure high-efficiency plant, but through combination with recent gas turbines, plant thermal efficiency of nearly 50% can be expected. Improvement of the plant thermal efficiency is influenced highly by the gas turbine inlet temperature (hereinafter called TIT). At present TIT=1500℃ has been attained by recent gas turbines. In order to increase TIT, it is necessary to improve heat resistance of materials for high temperature gas turbine hot parts, i.e. combustor baskets, turbine shrouds, transition pieces, turbine blades and vanes of the turbine upstream stages, etc. Therefore thermal barrier coating has been applied to above hot parts of recent gas turbine in order to protect base metal from hot combustion gases. It is now desired to give higher durability to TBC so as to endure higher combustion temperature. This paper introduces the long-term field experience of thermal barrier coating for heavy duty gas turbine parts as follows ; (1) Selection of coating system, coating material and manufacturing method (2) Result of thermal cycle test (3) Field evaluation of above thermal barrier coating
