In the manufacturing process of axial and radial turbomachinery, the CNC flank milling becomes more and more important in the last years. This method allows a flexible and fast production of structures with three dimensional surfaces. Especially high loaded semi opened centrifugal compressor impellers are predestinated for this production process. The ruled surfaces allow an optimized three dimensional twisted structure of the blades with optimal flow angle distributions. A cutter with a radius of zero is able to follow the straight lines, while conical cutters with a given radius produce errors. The cutter follows the hub and shroud contour exactly, but in the medium region of the surface there is a hyperbolic undercut which leads to a local reduction of the blade thickness. The result is a considerable change of the blade frequencies which is calculated by FE-code computation. A correction of the cutter path leads to a significant reduction of this undesired phenomena.
