Within the framework of an experimental investigation, comparative measurements were carried out on two turbochargers of differing construction with respect to their non-adiabatic operating behavior. The results described in this paper solely concern the behavior of the turbine, and concentrate on turbine efficiency under non-adiabatic and adiabatic conditions. The swirl in the turbine outlet flow is also taken into consideration. The effects of thermal insulation of the casing, turbine inlet temperature and adjustable inlet guide vanes on turbine efficiency are investigated. The results clearly show that large discrepancies can arise between adiabatic and non-adiabatic efficiency, particularly at low turbine throughput and high inlet temperatures.
