Nine and seven steroid glycosides were isolated respectively from the fresh rhizomes of Trillium kamtschaticum and Heloniopsis japonica (Table 1), and their structures were established (Table 2). Ten of them are first to be obtained from the plants and the isolation of pennogenin glycosides (IV, V, VI), nologenin glycosides (IX, X) (=prototype compounds of IV and VI), kryptogenin glycoside (XI) and 17(20)-dehydrokryptogenin glycosides (XII, XIII), all having the same or related sugar moieties, is particularly noted. Marker's nolonin is presumed to be a prototype compound of pennogenin glycoside and the structure (1) of nologenin is revised as shown in IX and X. According to Marker, pennogenin and kryptogenin are regarded as artifacts formed from nologenin (or nolonin) with acid, but actual existence of their glycosides in plants together with diosgenin glycosides and the prototype compounds of diosgenin- and pennogenin glycosides suggests a close relationship of these compounds also in a biogenetic sense. 17(20)-dehydrokryptogenin glycosides XII and XIII are temporarily assumed to be artifacts from nologenin glycosides IX and X, respectively.
