H.264/AVC is enhanced with the addition of intra prediction in the spatial domain. The prediction scheme has nine modes for 4×4 and 8×8 blocks and four modes for a 16×16 block. Such flexibility in terms of block size and mode reduces the prediction error and results in higher coding efficiency than existing video coding standards such as MPEG-4 Part 2. Conventional intra prediction uses only the adjoining pixels as reference pixels so coding efficiency can be degraded if they include noise or occlusion. The proposed scheme overcomes this weakness by allowing distant pixels to be used as reference pixels. The simulations show that the proposal offers an average gain of 0.25 dB at high bit rates.
