Motion compensation (MC) is one of the essential techniques in video coding. To reduce the power of MC errors, one can divide a frame into segments, and then multiply each segment by a coefficient. The coefficient is computed based on the correlation between the current frame and the MC frame. This coefficient is called the brightness-compensation coefficient (BC coefficient). For such a coefficient to be useful. the segment size has to be chosen suitably. The smaller the segment size is, the lower the prediction error becomes; thus, the coding rate can be reduced. On the other hand, because of the larger number of BC coefficients, the amount of information needed for them increases. Conventional techniques do not give any solutions to achieve a trade-off between the prediction error and the amount of information needed for the BC coefficients. Therefore, to obtain the optimal segment size, it is necessary to perform the encoding operation for all possible segment sizes. In this paper, we propose a method to determine the optimal segment size through estimation of the prediction error and coding rate. The results of a computer simulation show that our method can achieve about a 2-dB improvement in PSNR over a method using a fixed segment size
