This paper proposes direct camera calibration (DCC) for stably and reliably estimating camera external parameters with a high accuracy. In this new sophisticated approach, the optical path incident to each sensor chip in the camera is detected and then external camera parameter values are directly determined without using the internal parameters. The parameters obtained in real-image experiments agree well with those expected from mechanical setting of the camera. The image of marks generated by computer with the obtained camera parameters coincides quite well with the acquired real image within 0.1 pixel on average. This clearly shows that external parameter values can be simply, stably, and reliably calibrated independently of internal parameters.
