We implemented a system called Finger Pointer as a non-contact and non-worn pointing device based on human gestures and investigated its application potency. Finger Pointer remotely controls cursor location on the screen and recognizes instruction commands by image processing of finger pointing gestures. The system operation consists of calibration and execution modes. In the calibration mode, subjects point at several reference points specified on the screen, and then a linear model representing the relation between finger shape features obtained by the image processing and the coordinates of the pointed target on the screen are obtained by multiple regression analysis. In the execution mode, the location of the pointed target on the screen is estimated by the image features of the fingers, where a PC cursor is simultaneously projected on the screen, and the human-computer interaction system is controlled by several commands recognized by the shape of the operating fingers.
