The Japanese education system is in crisis, and fundamental reforms are under heated discussion. With the appearance of such problems as bullying in school (which sometimes lead to children's suicide), refusal to go to school, and a fall in educational level and ability, the importance of the spiritual education has been emphasized. In this study we examine the case of Finland, a country which is known for its high educational standard and students' academic ability. We look at the spiritual (ethical) education provided in a Finnish elementary school, and discuss its aims, the choice of contents and values affecting them. The aim of this report is to promote debate and present issues related to developing the spiritual (ethical) education in the Japanese educational system.
