This study was conducted to examine how the cardio-pulmonary system responds to an increasing workload on a cycle ergometer in healthy males aged an average of 25.7yrs. Lung diffusion capacity (D_<LCO>), blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), total peripheral resistance (TPR), and venous [H^+]_v during exercise were measured in Ex I. An impedance cardiography was used to measure SV and CO (=SV×HR). SV and CO were divided by body surface area, and expressed as an SV index (SI) and a CO index (CI). TPR was calculated using the equation ; TPR (dynes・sec/cm^5) =1332×MBP (mean BP)/CO. Oxygen uptake (VO_2) and HR during exercise were measured in Ex II, and a HR-VO_2 equation was calculated. VO_2 and VO_2max in Ex I were estimated (EVO_2max) using the HR-VO_2 equation. A linear increase was observed in the responses of HR, systolic BP, CI and [H^+]_v, a curve linear increase was seen in responses of SI and D_<LCO>, and a curve linear decrease was observed in responses of D_<LCO>/CO and TPR with increasing workload. CI increased linearly up to exhaustion, although SI reached a plateau at light to moderate intensity. D_<LCO> rose with a curve linear pattern, and D_<LCO>/CO decreased no further at intensity exceeding 40%EVO_2max. The increase in pulmonary blood flow due to the CO increase may shorten the contact time between red blood cells in pulmonary capillaries and alveolar oxygen, and results in a slow decrease in D_<LCO>/CO as well as gradual increase in D_<LCO> with increasing workload. The present study showed that CO increased linearly up to exhaustion, although D_<LCO> rose with a curve linear pattern. D_<LCO> might be an important determinant of exercise lung tolerance in these subjects.
