Due to the high values of surface tension and capillary constant of liquid metal, the surface tension plays an important rale in fusion welding both in static and dynamic manner. In this paper are reviewed the basic concepts of surface tension, particularly the thermodynamic derivation of capillary pressure, and mathematical approach to determine the surface profile of liquid pool from hydrostatic view point and its applicability to actual weld beads.
