The authors are carrying out a series of experiments to make clear the functions of the liver in horses for the purpose of establishing surer clinical diagnostic methods of anaemia infectiosa equorum. It is widely known that both TAKADA's and GROS' reactions are related primarily to the increased contents of γ-globulin in the blood serum, they becoming positive in a number of diseases due to some metabolic disturbances in the liver and, possibly, as signs of certain hepatic changes. In the present paper some experimental results are given concerning the application of the two serodiagnostic methods based on the above-mentioned reactions, making use of 85 anemia-infected and 10 healthy horses ; they may be summarized as follows : 1) The reactions by both the methods applied on the healthy horses were entirely negative, precipitation being observed in only one case in 2 test-tubes among the 9 of TAKADA's series. 2) In the anemia-infected cases, on the contrary, the horses of 2 years and over showed, positive reactions in about 94 per cent of them by TAKADA's method and in about 96 per cent by GROS' method The anemia-infected foals under a year, 4 individuals in all, however, gave invariably negative reactions by both of the methods. 3) The intensities of the two reactions ran almost parallel, becoming greater in proportion to the content of the total serum proteins as well as the sedimentation rate of erythrocytes in the blood. The intensities were observed to be more or less inversely proportional to the ratio of albumin to globulin found in the serum but almost indifferent to the number of erythrocytes. 4) Regarding the interrelations between TAKADA's reaction and the histopathological figures of the liver tissue, which may be grouped into the five "types" given below, the following results were obtained : the cases which turned out negative to TAKADA's reaction mostly corresponded either to the "initial resistant type" or to the "chronic resistant type", and those which were highly positive to the same reaction always, corresponded either to the "initial active type" or to the "relapse type". 5) As a rule, the frequency of siderocytes in the blood roughly paralleled the intensities of both the reactions. No siderocytes, however, could be detected in 6-11 per cent of the unquestionable infectious anemia cases which proved to be moderately or weakly poistive to these reactions. 6) The intensity of GROS' reaction was observed generally to increase in nearly all of hemolized (by accidental freezing) sera, but that of TAKADA's reaction appeared to remain almost unchanged, except for a few cases of highly-hemolized sera. From the above-stated experimental results, the two serodiagnostic methods based on. TAKADA's and GROS' reactions, respectively, may both be regarded as sensitive subsidiary diagnostic methods of the infectious anemia of horses with promising practical values when especially combined with the routine siderocyte examination, because they show in the majority (94-96 per cent) of cases positive results in relation to liver lesions in anemia-infected horses, excepting yearlings, even when no siderocytes can be detected from them.
