Social adaptation has been slow to meet the drastic demographic changes in postwar Japan but is mandatory if the country is to avoid social upheaval. To this end, the present study is conducted to evaluate the manpower situation in old age institutions taking as an example the new graduates from one of the newly eatablished schools for the training of registered care workers. Survey showed that the majority felt not enough social recognition of their expertise in being awarded and hence their specialized skills are not well utilized in their working places as they are sometimes used as nurse's aide or doing menial jobs. As a result, many are contemplating leaving the present working places such as special senior citizen's homes, health care centers and hospitals for senior citizens and transferring to other totally different fields where their special skills are not likely to be utilized. As this present state continues in spite of the strenous effort being made to train more care workers in recent years, Japan is likely to face the serious shortage of care workers in not too distant future to sustain her old age society which is fast approaching with unprecedented rapidity. Therefore, it is recommended that in order to secure the graduates in their proper working places, for which they are trained, the following measures are to be taken. 1. To secure social recognition of their expertise, 2. To provide close supervision of their working conditions in order to ascertain the porper use of their specialized skills and 3. Proper compensation is to be provided for their expertise and their devotion in terms of salaries and dayoffs.
