In recent years, there has been a nationwide movement toward the consolidation of municipalities. On the other hand, each city, town, or village has a unique culture, special products, etc. in which the residents of the area take pride. These need to be passed on to future generations. Moreover, in the last wenty years, beginning with the "one-village, one-specialty" economic movement in Oita Prefecture, village revitalization and community design in which special regional features are emphasized has been actively promoted throughout the country. However, in connection with the consolidation of municipalities, as soon as the place name of a small local community disappears from a map, there is also a possibility that various elements making up the cultural environment of an area may disappear. This study examines the merits and demerits of the consolidation of municipalities, based on the trends shown in the large-scale consolidations known as "the large merger of Showa" and "the large merger of Heisei", clarifying the regional factors in the consolidation-of-municipalities issue by focusing specifically on the town of Sakaki in Nagano Prefecture, the first author's home town.
