The classic Go/NoGo task is a well-known method of assessing discriminative reaction time. In contrast, the Stop/NoStop task is a relatively novel method of assessing discriminative reaction time in which participants are required not to make a motor response to a particular stimulus (Stop), but instead to respond to all other stimuli (NoStop). The differences in the two subcomponents of the P3 complex elicited by NoGo and Stop stimuli have previously been investigated (Akamine & Kida, 2004). The present study reexamined the NoGo and Stop P3 under the conditions inserting negative pictures in the Go and NoStop stimuli. Thirty-one healthy students performed two kinds of reaction time tasks, the Go/NoGo task and the Stop/NoStop task, using the pictures that consisted of six categories. The Stop stimuli induced more errors than did the NoGo stimuli. The amplitude of early P3 was not different between task conditions, while the amplitude of late P3 was remarkably larger for the Stop stimuli than for the NoGo stimuli. The early P3 peaked at around 300ms after stimulus onset and was distributed on a parietal site, while the late P3 peaked after 400ms and was distributed on central-parietal site. These results were consistent with our previous study. Overall, the present data reconfirm that the early P3 would be equivalent to the P3b, and the late P3 to the so-called NoGo P3. Thus, early P3 appears related to stimulus evaluation, and late P3 seems to reflect aspects of response inhibition.
