Various environmental problems have surfaced in our present society. It is recognized that the transition from the "mass production & consumption oriented society" to the "recycle-oriented society" needs to be accomplished urgently. In this paper, the current on-going shifting from materials for plastic products and man-made fibers from the fossil resources, that is petroleum based polymers, to the polymers based on environment-friendly natural resources is discussed. In addition, utilization of biomass resources, biodegradable polymers and polymers from sustainable resources are also discussed. The results of experiments for analysis of the dyeing behavior of polylactide fibers, which is a typical bio-based and biodegradable aliphatic polyester, are also reported. Considering the limited amount of fossil resources, preservation of petroleum is one of the most important issues for solving environment related world-wide problems. However, excessive consumption of biomass resources may also possibly cause damage to the environment. To avoid such damage, quick but meticulously planned transition to the "recycle-oriented society" keeping the balance between supply and demand of biomass materials is indispensable. Development of technology on environment-friendly polymers needs to be carried out.
