The analysis of cascading blackouts is important for safe operation of multi-area power networks. The blackouts are strongly related to electro-mechanical dynamics leading to repeated switching of power networks, called cascading transient dynamics. We show that the dynamics in five areas model is represented using a hybrid automaton and is estimated with reachability analysis of the hybrid automaton. The modeling and analysis imply that the dynamics related to cascading blackouts in multi-area power networks is examined through hybrid systems theory.
