Objective : Changes after death are not consistent, because they are affected by a variety of environmental factors surrounding cadavers, in addition to internal factors of the bodies. The estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) based on late changes after death in cadavers with putrefaction and/or decay is extremely difficult. We, therefore, clarified the putrefaction and decay processes of cadavers found in the northern area of Kanagawa Prefecture, especially by basing our findings on late postmortem body surfaces. In addition, we established indexes that can be used to estimate PMI. Materials and Methods : Using 990 cases of postmortem inspections or autopsies performed in our department with PMIs of 24 hours or longer, we evaluated the relationships among a variety of putrefactive body surface changes and PMIs by classifying cases according to seasons and/or the places in which the cadavers were discovered. Results : There were 801 indoor cases for which we performed a detailed evaluation. In every season, cases with shorter PMIs tended to have small areas of thoracoabdominal putrefactive discoloration, and the longer the PMIs were, the larger were the areas that were affected. Conclusions : Our results could detected the ranges of possible PMIs for each season, based on the putrefactive greenish discoloration localized to the thoracoabdominal region and the mode of the appearance of marbling. We, therefore, propose that the evaluation of these findings is more useful than previously considered for the estimation of PMI. We also discuss the future direction for further studies to evaluate bathtub, outdoor, and outdoor immersed cases.
