• The state of Uttar Pradesh is located in the center of Hindi speaking area in India. Its Council of Basic Education follows the guideline prepared by National Council of Educational Research and Training, the organ responsible for educational policy of the Government of India. Central government and the state government are trying to educate primary school children to have interest in national identity and the will to serve for national integration. In most of the primary schools in Uttar Pradesh, three languages are taught : mother tongue Hindi, classical Indian language Sanskrit and world widely spread English. In most cases, Hindi is taught from Class One to Class Five, while Sanskrit and English are taught from Class Three onward. Uttar Pradesh Council of Basic Education publishes three language textbooks : Bhaashaa Kiran or The Light of Mother Language for Hindi, Sanskrit Piiyuush or the Nectar of Sanskrit for Sanskrit and Elementary English for English. All these textbooks are offered to school children free of charge under the scheme of "Education for All." A survey of all these textbooks reveal the below given facts : 1. For the purpose of language education, these textbooks are properly edited as basic teaching material. 2. Importance to realize national identity is often mentioned in various situations in the textbooks. The national identity very often tends to Hindu identity, sometimes neglecting other communities in India and in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The present writer interviewed many related people on the subject : officials responsible for primary education, school teachers, parents and school children. It seems that the school children aspire to develop themselves by attending schools, and the people taking care of them are eager to offer more facilities for them. It is apparent that the scheme of "Education for All" is in good progress in the Hindi speaking Area of India.
