Surdas was a 16th century poet who dedicated devotional lyrics to Lord Krishna in north India. He was a poet, singer and saint (according to J. S. Hawley).Sursagar, or the Ocean of Surdas' poems, has no manuscript written by Surdas himself. Surdas was blind and the role of writing down his poems was performed by his fellow singers and some others in the religious sect to which he belonged. The devetional songs dedicated to Lord Krishna by Surdas attracted many people at that time, and his poems were sung in the temples and in homes.Because of this popularity, many lyrics written and sung by other people have been interpolated into the so called Sursagar. Thus, devotional songs attributed to Surdas often include works by other people. This situation is explained by J. S. Hawley. He states that the ipsissima verba of the "real" Surdas cannot be found and that the so called Sursagar of the 16th century should be understood to be the product of many singers, audiences and scribes. In this paper, the history of the publication of Sursagar texts and annotations/translations is briefly reviewed and some important publications are minutely studied.
