• Two Japanese monks, Yuankai and Yuanren, wrote the history of Chinese and Japanese Buddhism during the Tang dynasty. The former wrote "Tang Da He Shang Dong Zheng Chuan", which desribes the life of jian Zhen who went over from China to Japan. The latter wrote "Ru Tang Jiu Fa Xun Li Fa Ji", which descrives his stay in Tang China as a student. In this paper we examine the cultural exchange between medieval China and Japan focusing these two works from the perspective of historical materials.
