N-Allyl-N-α-substituted benzyl benzenesulfonamides were synthesized and their phytotoxic activities against barnyardgrass and rice plants were tested. Most of the compounds exhibited potent phytotoxicity against barnyardgrass, and high selectivity between transplanted rice seedlings and barnyardgrass. Among these compounds, α,α-dimethylbenzyl derivatives were not damaging to directly sown rice seeds under paddy conditions, and N-allyl-N-α,α-dimethylbenzylbenzenesulfonamide (3) exhibited high selective activity (ED_<10>/ED_<80>>66.6) between rice and barnyard millet in a petri dish test.
