We present a new α-β filter. In order to obtain the new α-β filter, we minimize the steady state variance of the estimated velocity for a constant velocity target under the condition that the steady state errors for a constant acceleration target are constant. We also show that this α-β filter cannot be obtained from the α-β filter which is derived from Kalman filter equations using the constant velocity target model. We also illustrate some numerical examples in order to compare the tracking performance of various α-β filters.
